You're right. There's such a thing as standard english which binds itself fast to grammatical and syntactical rules but it's important, in my opinion, to be descriptive when it comes to language and not prescriptive. All english is still english.

Both ways are correct; they are simply different dialects, much like the difference between Spain Spanish and Mexican Spanish. A visitor, native to either dialect, will adjust to the new dialect quite quickly, but neither is wrong. England itself has several unique dialects in that country alone that are just as 'different' or 'wrong' as American English is when a comparison is made.
